The Memphis VA Medical Center has an opening for a Cardiothoracic Surgeon that comes with a dual academic affiliation appointment with the University of Tennessee.

The Medical Center consists of one main campus and ten community-based outpatient clinics (CBOCs). The Medical Center is a 1a complexity tertiary care VA healthcare system located in one of the fastest growing Veteran population regions in the United States. The facility provides comprehensive care to almost 69,000 enrolled Veterans in a 52-county area of Western Tennessee, Northern Mississippi, and Northeast Arkansas. It includes 236 inpatient beds with a 26-bed Spinal Cord Injury Unit. It is a teaching hospital, providing a full range of patient care services, with state-of-the-art technology, as well as extensive education and research programs.

Duties include but are not limited to:

• Responsible for pre-operative, operative, and postoperative care of patients to correct or treat various pathological conditions of the heart and related blood vessels and structures within the chest
• Responsible for the care of patients with congenital and acquired pathologic conditions within the chest to include the heart, coronary arteries, myocardium, pericardium, lungs, esophagus, chest wall, and diaphragm
• Experienced and responsible for minimally invasive thoracic surgery and valve reconstruction
• Responsibilities include clinical activities supporting multi-disciplinary programs in chest oncology, research, teaching, and training residents/fellows
• Responsible for providing the patient with risks, benefits and alternative treatments and securing the informed consent of the patient/family prior to conducting invasive procedures
• Consultation/referral to other services/sections as appropriate

Federal Retirement Plan:

• VA employees are covered by the Federal Employees Retirement System (FERS). FERS is a three-tiered retirement plan composed of 1) Social Security benefits, 2) FERS-RAE basic benefits (pension), and 3) Thrift Savings Plan (TSP) which is a 401K-type plan
• How is the pension funded? VA employees automatically contribute 4.4% of their salary each pay period and the VA contributes 12.2% of the employee’s salary each pay period for a total annual contribution percentage equal to 16.6% of the employee’s salary
• Similar to the 401(k) savings plans widely available in the private sector, the TSP allows employees to tax defer a portion of their income each year, subject to the requirements of the Internal Revenue Service. For calendar year 2020, employees under the age of 50 may contribute up to $19,500, while those over age 50 are eligible to make catch-up contributions that allow them to defer up to $25,500.
• The Federal Government also provides an automatic basic contribution (1% of salary) and up to 4% of salary in matching contributions, depending on the amount of the employee contribution
• For retired military personnel, these benefits are in addition to full monthly retirement pay or pension
• In addition to FERS, VA provides health care insurance coverage for retired personnel

• Employees are vested in a federal pension after only 5 years service
